An ADU stands for accessory dwelling unit, you may have heard "Mother-in-Law suite" or "Backyard Cabin", that's exactly what an ADU is, somewhere to reside on the same property, different unit.
Along with ADU's, we have AADU's and DADU's. AADU's are attached accessory dwelling unit, and DADU's are a detached accessory dwelling unit. Both are considered ADU's.
For an Accessory Dwelling Unit to qualify as such, it must be a minimum of 70 sq.ft., with a minimum of 5' roof height, and must be smaller than the primary residence, with it's own exterior entry point.
Just like standard dwelling units, ADU's are stick build structures. They will be started and completed on site, but since these units are detached from your primary dwelling, the contractors, builders, and foreman won't be invading too muhc of your personal space.
From beginning to end, the total cost for an ADU (accessory dwelling unit) ranges from $200k-$300k. Depending on your soft costs and prep site work, it could be less, every situation is handled by case by case basis.
You can place an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) on property with an existing unit, like a mother in law suite, or on it's own lot, or even have multiple ADU's on the same lot, and build a community of backyard cabin cottages.
